Welcome to your photography unit for Yr 8. In this unit you will be focusing on Patterns and how to use natural forms to help you create them.
Week 1 - Artist Analysis - Craig Cramer - Patterns from Nature
DNA Task: Look carefully at the image to the right by Craig Crammer - discuss with the person sitting next to you how you think this image was made
Craig Cramer is an ex-magazine editor, plant lover and a bit of green thumb. He runs a personal blog called Ellis Hollow. Every month, he creates the most incredible scans of his plants and flowers, which he calls Bloom Day Scans.
Cramer recently started experimenting with his images by creating kaleidoscopic floral patterns.
Task 1: Pick 1 of Cramer's images to create an Analysis Slide - Answer the questions below to the best of your abilities.
Task 2: On the next slide, select a range (no fewer than 10) of Cramer's pattern images and arrange them in a grid collage.
WEEK 2 - MACRO SHOOT
DNA: Think about the smallest object you can see clearly with your naked eye. Now imagine you could magnify that object 10 times its size. What details or patterns do you think you might discover that you've never noticed before?
Below is an example of a Macro Shoot. You will need to take a minimum of 20 photos - this will give you a good number to select the 4 photos you would like to edit. Once you have taken all your photos, you will need to upload them into a folder in your google drive.
The final task, having uploaded them into your drive is to add them to a new slide in your presentation. Click INSERT > IMAGE > DRIVE and you should find all your photos there.
A contact sheet is like a page of pictures that a photographer prints out to help them choose which ones to keep.
To make it, they take a roll of film they used in their camera and cut it up into smaller strips. Then they lay these strips on a piece of special paper and shine light on it to make tiny versions of each picture.
This lets them see all the pictures at once and pick out the best ones.

WEEK 3 & 4 - EDITING - IMAGE 1 - 4
DNA: If you could change or enhance one aspect of a photograph you've taken, what would it be and why? For example, would you make the colors more vibrant, blur the background, or remove an unwanted object? How do you think these changes might affect the overall impact or message of your photo?
Choose an image from your shoot you would like to use for your edit in your google classroom. Right click the image and select 'download'
This will then appear in your downloads folder. Open Photoshop click OPEN and select your downloaded image.
You are going to edit your image before using it to create your pattern.
1. CROP the image into a square.
2. Adjust your LEVELS.
3. Adjust SATURATION.
4. Save a copy of your image as a JPEG
Click HERE for basic cropping tips
Open a new A4 document in Photoshop and Open your JPEG edited image.
Drag and drop the edit onto the A4 page and duplicate the layer 3 times.
Using Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontal OR Vertical, create your Horst P. Horst inspired pattern.
Below is a video tutorial to help you achieve a similar effect:
